Wahiawa bridge to re-open Friday
A month after it was closed for repairs Wahiawa’s Karsten Thot Bridge will re-open in both directions on Friday at 5 a.m. until renovations are completed.
The speed limit will be reduced to 15 mph between 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. everyday through the end of the month as work continues on the bridge, state officials said. The work includes sandblasting and repairs under the bridge.
Within the next year, additional work to complete anti-corrosive metal coating to the top of the bridge will be done at night or weekends.
The 80-year-old bridge was closed on Sept. 17 for repairs. It was shut down to all traffic while crews worked.
The state Department of Transportation received dozens of complaints from infuriated motorists stuck in the traffic mess from the closure of the bridge on Sept. 17.
Two days later, DOT officials revised its plans and opened the southbound lane on Karsten Thot Bridge for the morning rush hour to alleviate the Wahiawa traffic jam due to the bridge construction.
