Three separate boys basketball tournaments tip off this week on Oahu.
Radford’s James Alegre Invitational begins Wednesday with Honokaa and Farrington at 3 p.m., followed by Punahou-Leilehua, Saint Louis II vs. Radford and Hayward (Calif.) vs. Mililani.
The tournament runs through Saturday, when Punahou and Farrington headline with a 3 p.m. clash. Punahou beat Farrington 54-42 in the final of last year’s tournament.
McKinley’s Hawaii Self Storage Black and Gold Classic begins Thursday with McKinley and Kaimuki at 3:30 followed by Campbell vs. Kalani, Kapolei vs. Kalaheo and University vs. McKinley.
The tournament wraps up at 3 p.m. Saturday when Kapolei plays McKinley.
Kailua’s Surfrider Classic is the only tournament with a pure single-elimination bracket, with Waipahu and ‘Iolani II starting things off on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. Kailua and St. Francis are on their side of the bracket and play in the 8 p.m. game.
The other side begins with Roosevelt vs. Baldwin at 5 p.m. and Waianae vs. Saint Louis at 6:30. The winners of those games play Friday at 6:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. with four more games scheduled for Saturday and the championship slated for 7:30.
‘Iolani beat Kamehameha 62-48 in the tournament championship last year.
Wrestling starts up with Aiea Invitational
OIA wrestlers will hit the mat on Saturday in the Aiea Invitational.
Every OIA school is expected to compete, with weigh-ins beginning at 7 a.m. and action scheduled to start at 9 a.m.
There are no weight classes in the preseason tournaments; instead athletes are placed into pools of three or four, all within 5 to 10 pounds of each other.
Mililani’s Zachary Diamond dominated the first meet of the season last week, sweeping through his bracket at the Kailua Invitational.
