The 46-year-old San Diego man suspected of dismembering a man three months ago and dumping the body parts in Waipio is fighting extradition to Hawaii to face murder charges.

Bryan Suitt, who is wanted by Honolulu police on suspicion of murdering Alex Gonzales Sept. 15 is fighting extradition, San Diego Deputy District Attorney Richard Madruga said, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

At an extradition hearing in San Diego Superior Court Wednesday, Suitt’s attorney said he was fighting extradition, Madruga said.

Suitt will be arraigned today on a charge of being a fugitive in California, and may contest that he is the person wanted in Oahu.

"We will probably have an identification hearing 10 days later," Madruga said. He said his office can seek an extradition warrant from the governor of Hawaii, then authorities there could collect Suitt.

The suspect was being held without bail pending extradition proceedings.

The U.S. Marshal’s Fugitive Task Force picked up Suitt Monday at his mother’s home in Coronado.

Suitt was indicted by an Oahu grand jury Nov. 26 for second-degree murder. His indictment was sealed because authorities believed he may have fled the islands at that point. His bail was set at $5 million because he was considered a flight risk.

Police believe Suitt killed Gonzales, 34, and put parts of his body in a bag found on Sept. 15 by a couple looking for recyclables.

The Waianae couple found his torso and an arm in the bag. A police officer later told them the lower half of the body was in another part of the ravine.

Police released photos of the then-unidentified victim’s tattoos, seeking the public’s help in identifying him.
