Bipartisanship, yada, yada, yada
U.S. Rep. Don Young of Alaska surprised a lot of observers in July when he endorsed House colleague Rep. Mazie Hirono of Hawaii for U.S. Senate, praising her for being someone “who doesn’t just talk about ‘bipartisanship,’ but actually knows how to work with both Republicans and Democrats to get things done.”
It was a surprise because Young is a Republican while Hirono is a Democrat. But that was then. Now Young has thrown his earlier endorsement of Hirono under the bus and proclaimed his support instead for Hirono’s general election challenger, former Gov. Linda Lingle, a Republican, praising her “proven track record of working across the aisle to solve problems.”
So, in Young’s view, both are capable of constructive bipartisanship, but when crunch time is upon us, party loyalty trumps collegial friendship. Ah, politics.
Affordable living in lovely Kakaako
Few places in the country would call $1,100-$1,400 monthly to rent 304 to 613 square feet of living space “affordable” — but as we all know, few places are as desirable as urban Honolulu. Kakaako, to be precise, and that’s where 54 units in a revamped four-story building at 680 Ala Moana will be ready for rent next month.
The apartments at Six Eighty — can’t miss the building’s bright green trim — aim to usher in a new era for Kakaako, the first major piece of Kamehameha Schools’ master plan to redevelop 29 acres there. See www.680alamoana.com.
Cirrus Asset Management will start accepting filled-out applications in person at 9 a.m. Oct. 29 at 441 Walina St. Judging by the model unit, the “urban-island living” concept is off to a snazzy start.
