Girl Scout camps here not for sale
All Girl Scouts or former Girl Scouts surely read with some alarm that the national organization is considering selling some of its camps, especially those with mounting bills for maintenance and upgrades.
So far, this issue has not reared its head in Hawaii. Reyna Kaneko, chief marketing officer for the local Girl Scout council, assures people there are no plans to put any of the islands’ three Girl Scout camps on the block: Camp Paumalu, on Oahu; Camp Piliholo, on Maui; and Camp Kilohana, on Hawaii island.
These places could never be replaced at today’s property values, so perhaps that’s what’s behind the council’s calculation. Camping is core to Scouting, and it’s not like the troops here can bus it to the next nearest one.
Island girl a hit in softball playoff
It’s always great to see Hawaii kids come through in a pinch, especially when it’s done on a national stage — or field.
So it was a "Boom!" moment when Waialua’s Kimberlee Souza hit a game-winning solo home run Thursday, giving her University of Washington Huskies a 4-3 victory over Nebraska in the eighth inning during the Women’s College World Series (WCWS) opener.
The win advanced the Iolani School softball standout and her teammates into today’s second-round match-up against Tennessee, to be televised on ESPN at 1 p.m. Hawaii time. With the WCWS’s double-elimination setup, Souza and Co. are guaranteed to play again Saturday, at least. Going all the way into Monday’s championship finale would be heady stuff, indeed. But, one game at a time.
