Police restricted access to about 50 homes in an Enchanted Lake neighborhood for more than seven hours Tuesday while officers checked out a report that burglars that may be armed were inside a house being tented for termites.

About 5 p.m., police said it appeared the house had been burglarized, but that the intruder or intruders had left before officers arrived about 10:20 a.m.

Police declared the house cleared at about 6:30 p.m. Roads were expected to open shortly thereafter.

Employees of Kamaaina Termite & Pest Control arrived at the two-story house Tuesday morning to remove the fumigation tent covering the home and discovered a slice in the tent. The company called police.

Officers cordoned off the area around the house at the corner of Hamakua Drive and Keolu Drive.

The area was closed to vehicles and pedestrians, and access was restricted to residents in about 50 houses, said Clyde Ho, HPD Windward District commander.

Ho said a rifle and a shotgun were found outside the house. They belonged to the homeowner’s late husband. It was not immediately known if anything had been stolen, Ho said.

Officers entered the house about 2 p.m. and began searching the rooms.

Burglars are known to attempt to break into tented homes. In July 2011, two men were hospitalized after allegedly trying to burglarize a home being fumigated on Lusitana Street near Punchbowl. One of the men had to be pulled from the house.
