More than 60 years after its formation, Kai Oni Canoe Club is enjoying a rebirth of sorts — the second such renaissance in a decade — as the club navigates the two currents found in Kailua Bay that, while sometimes rough, end up pushing the club forward.

The Oahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association held its second event of the season, the King Kamehameha Regatta, on Sunday in Kailua and Kai Oni used its familiar “churning waters” after which the club is named to showcase the organization’s latest regeneration.

While it operates in the shadow of powerful paddling neighbors Kailua and Lanikai Canoe Clubs, Kai Oni has grown from 14 paddlers and one racing crew in 2014 to 80 paddlers and at least 10 competitive crews this season.

“We started spreading the word to friends, family, people we used to paddle with, and before we knew it, we were at 80 paddlers,” said Kalani Kaanaana, who took over as Kai Oni’s head coach last year.

“Kai Oni is actually older than OHCRA, and to see that legacy die off would have been horrible. It was about recognizing an important lineage and keeping the canoe in the water.”

The small Kailua-based outrigger canoe paddling team was started by Joseph “Stew” Kalama and Max Kamaiopili in 1952 as an athletic club that also encompassed other recreational endeavors such as basketball and baseball. A year later the club received its first koa canoe, dubbed “Manuiwa,” a priceless vessel that Kai Oni still races with.

The club was inactive in 2002 and 2003 after failing to field an adequate roster of paddlers — a result of the prolonged “mourning” that Kaanaana explained was endured by Kai Oni following Kalama’s death in 2000. According to OHCRA rules, member clubs are cut from the racing organization after being inactive for three consecutive years. The club returned in 2004 with a skeleton crew to keep Kai Oni afloat.

By 2007, the club had grown to include 80 paddlers after just 30 competitors represented Kai Oni in 2005. However, membership declined over the next handful of years and put the club on the brink of extinction yet again.

Enter Kaanaana, who started paddling with the club in 2006 and recently embraced the leadership role with the goal of returning Kai Oni to relevance.

“Now that the club is back on its feet, it’s about building relationships and memories that last a lifetime,” Kaanaana said. “A lot of our older paddlers are chiming in on social media, including some living as far away as Texas, and it’s like things haven’t skipped a beat. It’s all about keeping the culture alive and connecting that to the canoe — everything else is icing on the cake.”

The skipper added coaches Bryson Villarosa and Kehau Meyer to lead the men’s and women’s programs, and another familiar face in Stu “Boy” Kalama — the founder’s son — returned to coach the women’s 60 crew after a long stint at Kailua Canoe Club.

“I figured I’d better come back to our family club before I pass away,” said Kalama, a 71-year-old who also helps out by fixing Kai Oni’s canoes. “It feels really good; now I sleep well at night.”

Meyer explained that the club has attracted members by refocusing on the cultural aspect of the state sport as well as working with paddlers on creating flexible schedules to help, for instance, those who work long hours or have young children. Like Kaanaana, Meyer made the move to Kai Oni after a long stretch at Kailua and is dedicated to rebuilding the club for which her grandfather, Joe Meyer, paddled.

“I get to paddle in the same canoe and seat that my grandfather sat in — that’s better than winning any medal,” said Meyer, who also coaches the Kamehameha Schools girls’ paddling program.

Paddlers enjoyed light sea breezes and mostly clear skies throughout Sunday’s regatta as nearly 3,300 competitors ranging in age from 12-and-under to 65-and-above represented OHCRA’s 18-member clubs in 43 races spanning a quarter-mile to 1.5 miles. Winning crews earned 7 points toward the team standings, while second-, third-, fourth-, fifth- and sixth-place finishers were awarded 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 points, respectively.

Two-time defending OHCRA champion Hui Nalu won its second consecutive AAA division (27-42 crews entered) and overall regatta title of 2015 with 177 points and 11 race victories. Outrigger (159 points), which won a regatta-high 12 events, claimed second place ahead of host Kailua (157 points) and Lanikai (140 points) to round out the large division.

Keahiakahoe (58 points) fended off Hui Lanakila (52 points) to claim the AA division (14-26 crews entered), while Leeward Kai (28 points) edged Waimanalo (26 points) to earn the A division (1-13 crews entered) trophy.

In addition to battling for gold in individual races, crews aimed to qualify for the Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association State Championship regatta scheduled for Aug. 1 at Hilo Bay. The top five crews from each OHCRA event earn automatic berths in the state race based on cumulative point standings.

OHCRA returns to action on Sunday at Nanakuli Beach Park for its annual Father’s Day Regatta. Na ‘Ohana O Na Hui Wa‘a holds its fifth event of the season Sunday with the Windward Kai Regatta at Kailua Beach Park.
