Hearing to be held on ‘abandoned’ baby’s fate

BRUCE ASATO / BASATO@STARADVERTISER.COM
Early Monday a woman discovered an infant at Sandy Beach who apparently had been abandoned shortly after birth.

What happens to a newborn girl police say was dropped off at a hospital will be decided in Family Court.

The court will decide whether to return the child to her family or whether parental rights will be terminated. An initial hearing is scheduled for today. The proceeding is closed to the public and is confidential.

Police say 21-year-old Keala Simeona reported she found the baby at Sandy Beach and took her to the hospital. Police later determined Simeona is the mother.

To determine parentage, the state Department of Human Services plans to ask Family Court to order Simeona to submit to DNA testing. It will also seek DNA testing for the father, if a father is identified.
