Ward theater to feature new Dolby sound
Consolidated Theatres this weekend is rolling out its new Dolby Atmos surround-sound system in its Ward Titan XC theater with the opening of "Star Trek Into Darkness" — despite a torn screen.
The sizable angular tear on the right side of the screen, which measures 66 feet wide and 35 feet high, was caused last weekend by falling scaffolding while the theater’s sound system was being rewired.
Maui mortgage firm ordered to cease loans
A Maui mortgage company was ordered Friday by the state Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs to stop issuing loans immediately.
The state says Maui resident Kathleen Patricia Morris and Herman-Morris Enterprises Inc. violated Hawaii law regulating financial institutions. The state suspects that Morris and her company started loans without authorization. Officials also say Morris and her company took money from home owners without passing it along to lenders. Morris and her company are also accused of failing to update their financial disclosure and not notifying the state about a past revoked license.
RevoluSun names Earth Day contest winners
Honolulu-based solar energy company RevoluSun has announced the winners of its Earth Day contest to encourage its employees and members of the public to promote sustainable practices.
Prizes were awarded in Hawaii and Massachusetts, where RevoluSun also does business. The public winners were judged by the amount of Facebook "likes" they received when posting images and videos of their own sustainable activities online.
Griffith Jurgens, a sixth-grade teacher at Sacred Hearts Academy, taught students about sustainability on Earth Day. David Whitman in Martha’s Vineyard created a human powered vehicle and pedaled to work.
Both won backpacks with solar-powered chargers from RevoluSun.
Marian Kang, a paralegal for RevoluSun in Hawaii and Doug Pierce, a RevoluSun general manager in Newton, Mass., were the company winners. Kang taught students about sustainability on Earth Day, while Pierce plucked eggs from his chicken coop for breakfast, built a garden and composted.
The two won briefcases with solar-powered chargers.
