Lava flow in Puna foments fear of fires

The Kahaualea 2 flow remains active, with scattered pahoehoe breakouts driving slow advancement through the forest. Breakouts at the flow margins trigger forest fires and numerous plumes of smoke, as shown in this photo taken April 7. A satellite image on April 9 showed the active tip of the Kahaualea 2 flow at 5.2 miles northeast of Puu Oo.
