Hawaiian Electric Co. crews restored power Tuesday night to all but a handful of the combined total of 2,400 customers in Liliha and Kalihi who were left in the dark due to motor vehicle accidents.

The first outage began at 5:30 p.m. when a car hit and damaged a utility pole on Liliha Street, causing 1,100 customers to lose power, HECO said in an e-mail.

Police shut down Liliha Street in both directions between Judd Street and Halapia Place due to the leaning pole.

HECO restored service to 600 customers by 6:30 p.m., but 500 customers were still without power at 8:18 p.m. Although 15 customers were without power at 9 p.m., HECO said their power was restored at 6 a.m. today.

HECO crews responded to a second outage at about 7:30 p.m.

Police dispatch said that a large truck pulled utility lines down and HECO said it damaged a utility pole near  the intersection of  North King and Umi streets.

About 1,300 customers were affected, HECO said. By 8:30 p.m., power had been restored to all but 600 customers. By 10:45 p.m., the remaining Kalihi customers got their electricity back.

Police shut down King in both directions between Middle and Umi streets.
