Single-engine plane lands on its belly
No one was injured when a single-engine Piper 28 Cherokee landed safely at Kalaeloa on its belly Monday, the Federal Aviation Administration reported.
The FAA said it will investigate the incident that occurred at 5:30 p.m. at John Rodgers Field when the aircraft landed with its landing gear up.
The pilot was the only person on the four-seat aircraft, which sustained minor damage.
The 13-year-old aircraft is registered to George’s Aviation Services on Lagoon Drive.
Caldwell heading to Congress of Cities
Mayor Kirk Caldwell will attend the National League of Cities’ 2014 Congress of Cities this week.
Caldwell left Tuesday for Austin, Texas, to participate in the conference. He is scheduled to return to Honolulu on Friday.
Civil Defense keeps watch over lava flow
PAHOA, Hawaii » It was another quiet day for a lava flow threatening a rural Big Island town.
Hawaii County Civil Defense said Tuesday there continues to be very little activity along the breakouts of the lava flow and no advancement noted since the weekend.
Civil Defense Director Darryl Oliveira said officials continue to monitor the lava for any changes in behavior and flow activity.
The slow-moving lava crossed a country road in Pahoa last month. Since then it has burned down a vacant house and a garden shed. The molten rock also has burned tires, some metal materials and vegetation in its path.
Kilauea Volcano continues to erupt at its summit. The volcano has been erupting continuously for more than 31 years.
Invasive fern found growing along highway
LIHUE » Invasive-species officials on Kauai are taking steps to eradicate a non-native fern that can replace indigenous species.
The Kauai Invasive Species Committee confirmed reports of giant invasive mule’s foot fern growing along Kuhio Highway near Kalihiwai Bridge, The Garden Island reported Tuesday.
Mule’s foot fern is native to Polynesia, Melanesia, Micronesia, Australia and New Guinea. It has invaded Hawaii, Costa Rica and Jamaica, according to the Global Invasive Species Database. Cultivated as an ornamental in some locations, in can establish dense stands that displace native plants and reduce biodiversity.
