The University of Hawaii football team will appear on network TV at least five times this season, but might go without an ESPN showing for the first time in 13 years.
Barring a late addition by ESPN, all UH’s network games will be on either the CBS Sports Network or the Pac-12 Network.
The Pac-12 announced Wednesday that UH’s Sept. 7 game at Oregon State will be shown on the Pac-12 Network.
It will be UH’s first football appearance in the two-year history of the league network.
Oceanic Time Warner Cable and Hawaiian Telcom offer the Pac-12 Network and CBS Sports Network on some tiers locally.
UH has appeared at least once on ESPN every year since 1995 with the exception of 2000.
In the 2007 Sugar Bowl season, UH had five ESPN appearances.
Athletic director Ben Jay said, "The exposure on those networks will be great, especially on the mainland."
Asked whether UH games shown on CBS Sports Network and the Pac-12 Network instead of ESPN would impact recruiting, head coach Norm Chow said, "No."
ESPN has already chosen 22 Mountain West Conference games, but, under the terms of its contract with MWC, may add additional games in a six- to 12-day window, a conference spokesman said.
Unless ESPN or another partner adds games, UH expects to make seven games available for its pay-per-view package this season. Seven is the minimum for UH to be guaranteed the $2.3 minimum rights fee under the terms of its deal with Oceanic.
Last year six games were shown on PPV.
UH said an announcement of the PPV lineup will likely come about the time of its July 8 opening of new season-ticket sales for football.
