After about 10 years, the City has nearly completed the last link in a $2.8 million program to provide off-street parking in downtown Honolulu.
The sixth municipal lot, the old Von Hamm-Young Garage adjoining the Y.W.C.A. on Richards Street, was opened at 7:30 a.m. yesterday. It will close at 6 p.m. daily except Sundays and holidays.
Ultimately, the six lots are expected to provide some 950 stalls. A decision may be reached early next year on possible conversion of the garage property to a two-story parking facility.
City officials and downtown merchants have pushed the program as a result of a nearly eight per cent increase in automobile registrations a year.
In 1935, a total of 35,102 vehicles of all types were registered in the City-County. By 1957, this figure had reached 159,227.
Some property owners weren’t happy about the assessments necessary for the program and litigation went all the way to the Territorial Supreme Court.
Pending a recent favorable decision, the City advance enough money to complete about 75 per cent of the total program.
City Attorney Norman K. Chung said a resolution authorizing the sale of $1.4 million in revenue bonds should be presented to Supervisors today.
This amount will be enough to complete the program.
