Lifeguards reopened DT Flemings Beach near Kapalua on Maui Sunday morning, but shark warning signs remain posted and lifeguards are advising beach-goers not to go into the water because the ocean in the area remains murky and full of debris from stream run-off, a Maui Fire Department spokesman said.

Three shark sightings close to shore prompted officials to close DT Fleming Beach Saturday.

Ocean Safety officials said a hammerhead shark was seen about five to 10 yards offshore at about 9 a.m. It was seen again at about 11:15 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

Lifeguards closed the beach for about 2 hours after the initial sighting, closed it again for about 2 hours after the second sighting and closed it until Sunday morning after the third sighting.

Ocean Safety officials did not see any sharks Sunday morning.

There have been eight shark attacks on Maui this year. Two have been fatal.
