Convicted felon suspected in infant’s death
A 36-year-old Waipahu man with past convictions for abuse of a family or household member is being investigated by police regarding the death of a 6-week-old boy.
The medical examiner’s office identified the infant as Gabriel Mambrere of Waipahu. The cause of death is under investigation, the medical examiner’s office said.
The baby was found unresponsive at a Waipahu home about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, police said.
Paramedics took the baby in critical condition to a hospital, where he died.
The suspect was arrested at police headquarters Wednesday night on suspicion of second-degree murder. Court records show he was convicted three times of misdemeanor offenses of abuse in 2001.
The suspect also has two felony convictions, for burglary in 2000 and theft in 2003.
Ewa Beach standoff ends in couple’s arrest
An Ewa Beach couple faces criminal charges after an eight-hour standoff with police.
The incident began after 8 p.m. Wednesday when an officer went to a Halolani Street address to investigate a parking complaint. While interviewing a 55-year-old man, the officer noticed that the man was wearing a shoulder holster showing the butt of a firearm, police said.
The man resisted when the officer tried to arrest him, police said. At that point, the man’s 55-year-old wife intervened, and the suspect fled into his home. He refused to come out until 5:15 a.m. Thursday, when he surrendered to police. Homes in the area were evacuated during the standoff.
The male suspect was arrested on suspicion of second-degree terroristic threatening and several firearms violation because he is a convicted felon, police said. His wife was arrested on suspicion of harassing a police officer.
