Stefan Jovanovic and Niko Filipovich didn’t need the Ohana Hoopfest to convince them to make the Hawaii men’s basketball team their new family.
The two seniors at Bishop Montgomery High School in Torrance, Calif., gave their oral commitments to play for the Rainbow Warriors starting in the 2013-14 season well before arriving in the islands for their official visit this weekend.
Then they enjoyed Friday night’s Hoopfest just the same.
The 6-foot-10, 240-pound center Jovanovic, of Serbia, and 6-foot point guard Filipovich, of Los Angeles, cannot sign national letters of intent with the ‘Bows until Nov. 14, the first day of the fall signing period. UH coach Gib Arnold cannot comment on recruits until they are signed.
Jovanovic, who has been in California for three years, has the game of a European big man. Filipovich is said to be a good athlete and solid defender who is efficient at running offenses. Filipovich would be 17 when he arrives as a UH freshman.
The two both started for Bishop Montgomery last season, helping the Knights to a 23-5 record and the CIF Southern Section 4AA quarterfinals.
They are the second and third known commits to UH for next season. Michael Thomas, a 6-foot-5 wing player at El Camino Real High (Calif.), was the first.
The last pair of teammates UH had commit to the same recruiting class were Petras Balocka and Lasha Parghalava out of Pensacola Junior College for the 2008-09 season.
