2-car collision kills 1, injures another
One person was killed and another was taken to the hospital with chest, abdominal and head injuries following a two-car collision in Glenwood on Hawaii island Thursday afternoon.
Hawaii County police said the accident occurred at 4:30 p.m. near the 20-mile marker on Highway 11.
A 33-year-old woman driving a van was heading toward Hilo when she broadsided a small station wagon, police said. The van flipped, landing on its roof.
The woman was removed from the car by bystanders and later taken to a hospital.
The driver of the station wagon, 55, was ejected on impact and landed in a drainage ditch where he was found with no signs of life, according to police.
Highway 11 was closed for about four hours.
Computers stolen from UH classrooms
Thieves stole more computers from University of Hawaii-Manoa classrooms in the second reported break-in in as many months.
According to campus security, four classrooms in Saunders Hall were broken into just before 2 a.m. Thursday, and iMac computers were taken.
Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Campus Security at 956-6911 or the Honolulu Police Department.
In September four computers were stolen from Dean Hall. The burglars entered the building through a window, according to campus security.
Search for Coast Guardsman suspended
After a three-day search covering 10,000 square miles, the Coast Guard and Fire and Police departments at 6 p.m. Friday suspended their hunt for a 36-year-old Coast Guardsman stationed at Air Station Barbers Point.
Petty Officer 1st Class Russell Matthews, an aviation survival technician, was last seen Tuesday. Police recovered his car Wednesday morning at a Kaena Point parking lot.
Police said Matthews had been emotionally distraught.
Victim in McCully crash is identified
The Medical Examiner’s Office has identified a 90-year-old Honolulu man who died Oct. 3 from injuries in a motor vehicle crash Sept. 13 in McCully.
Walter Okumoto died of complications from head injuries due to a motor vehicle collision and probable previous head trauma, but the manner of death has been deferred, the Medical Examiner’s Office said.
Police said Okumoto was driving a Toyota Corolla westbound on Citron Street when he disregarded a red signal and was broadsided by a blue 2006 Toyota Tacoma driven by a 29-year-old Kailua man at McCully and Citron streets.
Okumoto was taken to Kuakini Medical Center in good condition but later died.
This was the 48th Oahu traffic fatality, compared with 46 the same time last year.
