UH pitching coach Chad Konishi will not return

Hawaii associate coach Chad Konishi’s contract will not be renewed for next season, ending his 12-year tenure with the Rainbows.

The decision comes days after Hawaii finished the 2013 season 16-35, matching the fewest wins in 39 years.

“We appreciate everything he has done for us and really wish him well,” head coach Mike Trapasso said Wednesday afternoon. “We just need to move in a different direction as a staff that focuses more on the offense.”

Trapasso plans to hire a hitting coach to replace Konishi, who served as UH’s pitching coach and recruiting coordinator since 2001.

Rusty McNamara, who has been the hitting coach for the last three seasons, will have his duties shifted to recruiting and serving as an assistant to the offense.

Both full-time assistant coaches will focus on offense. Trapasso will continue to handle pitching and defense.

Hawaii finished seventh in the Big West this season with a 4.50 team ERA but was last in offense with a .239 batting average.
