This time, the Kamehameha Warriors got the win in Saints territory.

Noa Kinimaka and Alaka’i Freitas combined for seven points in overtime as No. 9 Kamehameha pulled out a tough 54-45 win over host St. Francis in the semifinals of the St. Francis Merv Lopes Hoops Classic on Saturday night.

The battle was a rematch of a nonconference game played on Dec. 9, when host St. Francis won 46-43 in overtime. However, Kamehameha has caught fire in recent games, winning six in a row with the victory on Saturday.

"St. Francis played terrific, they knocked down shots in the first half. They play man (defense) as good as anyone in the state," Warriors coach Greg Tacon said. "They’ve got good players. We weren’t discouraged at all by anything we were doing."

Hustling Kayson Smith-Bejgrowicz added 12 points and five rebounds, and Jaycob Smith tallied seven points, three steals and tough defense for the Warriors (11-4).

Kamehameha shot 38 percent from the field (20-for-53) and St. Francis shot 35 percent (18-for-52). The Warriors owned a slight edge on the boards, 41-34.

Reserve forward Elijah Leslie, a 6-foot-3 senior, provided an extra boost in the extra period.

"Eli came in for the overtime, had a layup and a big rebound," Tacon said.

"He’s a kid, if we can get him going, I trusted him in the overtime situation after he didn’t play at all in the fourth quarter."

Matthew Nuumanaia led St. Francis (8-8) with 17 points and Ranan Mamiya added 10. Nuumanaia, already playing on two heavily taped ankles, suffered a back injury early in OT and sat for a couple of minutes. By the time he returned, the Saints trailed by six points.

It was a gritty effort defensively by the Warriors and coach Sol Batoon’s Saints. Both used man defense in the halfcourt and some fullcourt pressure. There were 13 lead changes, including Freitas’ follow shot to give Kamehameha the lead for good, 45-43, to start the extra period.

Prior to OT, the Saints threw the ball away with 6.5 seconds to play. Kamehameha had a chance to win, but Smith’s tough jumper in the lane missed at the buzzer.

The Warriors beat No. 3 Farrington 72-61 and Kamehameha-Hawaii 72-42 to reach the semifinal round. Now they get a shot at the tourney title.

"We’re happy we get to play in this tournament, but all I care about is next Saturday," Tacon said, referring to the regular-season opener in the ILH.

Santa Margarita (Calif.) 53, ‘Iolani 43

Joe Furstinger scored 18 points and sparked the tall Eagles’ defensive shutdown of the Raiders in the second half.

Brett Oosdyke added 11 points for the Eagles, who will meet Kamehameha in the tourney title game on Monday.

Ikaika Phillip led ‘Iolani with 14 points. The Raiders led 35-30 in the third quarter after Zach Buscher hit four free throws in a row — including two after a technical foul on Santa Margarita coach Jeff Reinert. But the visitors went on a 10-0 run and never let up.
