Search continues for missing Coast Guardsman
For the third day the Coast Guard and the Honolulu Fire Department continued the search for a missing 36-year-old Coast Guardsman who abandoned his car near Kaena Point.
Petty Officer 1st Class Russell Matthews, an aviation survival technician from Barbers Point Air Station, was last seen at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in Pupukea. Police found his car Wednesday at a Kaena Point parking lot. He was reportedly distraught, police said.
On Thursday, a Coast Guard helicopter, a 110-foot cutter and a C130 aircraft covered 1,233 square miles, but found nothing.
The Coast Guard, using the same three vessels and aircraft, plan to comb the same area today.
HFD’s helicopter crew as well as ground teams searched Thursday from Yokohama Bay to Kaena Point along the coastline and offshore waters.
They also scoured the area beyond the shoreline in Mokuleia, including the cliffs and ravines.
