A 16-year-old Waimanalo boy accused of fatally stabbing his adoptive mother called police to the family home and admitted to what he did, Deputy Prosecutor Chastity Imamura told a state judge Wednesday.

Imamura made her remarks after an Oahu grand jury returned an indictment charging Ka’Ano’i Iz Kipapa with murder for the July 5 stabbing death of 52-year-old Jolyn Kipapa.

The indictment means Ka’Ano’i Kipapa will face trial in state court for murder as an adult.

Circuit Judge Richard Perkins confirmed his bail at $250,000.

Kipapa remains in custody at Oahu Community Correctional Center.

He became eligible to be charged and tried as an adult after a state Family Court judge waived the court’s jurisdiction over him Oct. 30.

The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office says Jolyn Kipapa died from sharp force injuries of the head, torso and extremities.

Imamura told Perkins that Honolulu police got a call from a male who said that "something dark came over him and that his mom was in bed with blood all over her."

She said Ka’Ano’i Kipapa was at the family’s home at Waimanalo Bay Beach Park alone with his mother and was supposed to help her because she was partially disabled due to an illness. Imamura said the boy’s adoptive father and brother had left to go to work while his mother was sleeping.

In a statement to police, the teenager said "he became enraged and began to beat and stab" his mother with several knives. He said after he called 911 at 7:48 a.m., he went back and repeatedly stabbed Kipapa.

When the first officer to respond entered the home, the teen emerged from a back room covered in blood, Imamura said. The officer detained the boy.

Police found a kitchen knife and cleaver at the foot of the bed near Jolyn Kipapa, who had numerous wounds to her torso and face consistent with stabbing, slashing and blunt force, Imamura said.

Family members said Kipapa’s husband is the beach park’s caretaker and besides children of their own, the couple had raised and adopted several children.
