High surf advisory in effect for north and west shores

A surfer contemplates his decision on whether to head out into the ocean at Ehukai Beach Park on Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2012 on Oahu's North Shore. High surf kept lifeguards busy, as thousands came to witness the 15-20-foot waves.
A high surf advisory replaces the previous warning that was issued for most north and west-facing shores statewide and is in effect until noon today, according to the National Weather Service.
Surf is expected to reach up to 12 feet along north-facing shores and 8 feet along west-facing shores, the weather service said.
Waves heights are expected to abate below advisory levels by this afternoon.
