California man is victim in near drowning
A 46-year-old Northern California visitor has been identified as the man who died after a near drowning at a Ko Olina lagoon Monday.
An autopsy was conducted Tuesday on Chester Ballesteros. The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office said the determination of the cause of death was still pending.
Ballesteros, of Campbell, a suburb of San Jose, was hospitalized in critical condition after the near drowning at Lagoon 4 of Ko Olina Resort at about 12:30 p.m. Monday, the city Department of Emergency Services said.
Aiea house fire does $215,000 in damage
A fire caused an estimated $215,000 in damage to a house in Aiea on Monday afternoon.
Honolulu Fire spokesman Capt. James Todd said Tuesday the cause of the fire was still under investigation. Todd said firefighters took about 15 minutes to get the fire at the Ieie Place house under control after receiving the alarm at 4:18 p.m. Monday.
Net fisherman found in waters off Kohala ID’d
A 79-year-old Kohala man who apparently drowned Monday while fishing with a throw net off the North Kohala Coast was identified as Alfredo Orita.
A 71-year-old woman fishing with Orita said he was using a throw net near the Halaula lighthouse when she lost sight of him for a few minutes and then saw him floating face down in the ocean at about 11:20 a.m.
A Hawaii Fire Department helicopter spotted his body about 200 yards offshore, and a rescue helicopter brought it to shore.
