Events will close Ford Island Bridge

The Ford Island Bridge will be closed this week because of ceremonies commemorating the 73rd anniversary of the Japanese attack on the Pacific Fleet on Dec. 7, 1941.

The first closure of the bridge connecting Ford Island to Pearl Harbor will occur between 9:30 and 11 a.m. Friday to all vehicles while the Navy conducts a rehearsal of a flotilla of ships passing in review. The bridge again will be closed from 7 to 10 a.m. Dec. 7.

Navy officials also warn area residents that between 9 and 11 a.m. Friday, a rehearsal for a cannon salute will be held. The second cannon salute will be held during the Pearl Harbor ceremonies between 9 and 9:30 a.m. Dec. 7.

The Dec. 7 ceremonies will conclude with a flyby of vintage aircraft beginning at 9:20 a.m.

Maui man found in water is ID’d

A Maui man who died Thursday after lifeguards pulled him from the water at Hookipa Beach Park has been identified as Eric Strohsacker from Kihei, Maui police said.

Lifeguards found the 53-year-old man’s body floating face down about 11:15 a.m. and tried to revive him on the beach. He died at the hospital.

The cause of death as not been determined, Maui police said.

Work will close part of Ainakea

Maui County will begin seal-coating Ainakea Road in Lahaina in December, which will restrict traffic to one lane.

Also, while the coating is drying, which takes four to six hours, there will be no access to adjacent driveways, said the county Department of Public Works. Residents are asked to remove all vehicles along the roadway and to shut off all sprinkler systems while crews are working on the street.

Follow-up memos are being sent to residents to inform them which areas will be affected when.

The county of Maui is the first in Hawaii to use seal-coating as a pavement surface treatment to extend the life of county roads, improve safety and save money.

The coating, a mixture of emulsified asphalt, water and minerals, protects the top layer of asphalt from oxidation and wear caused by exposure to the sun, air, water and chemicals such as oil and gasoline.
