UH’s Balentine BWC’s Field Athlete of Year
University of Hawaii senior Samantha Balentine, ranked 10th nationally in the high jump, was named the Big West Conference’s Field Athlete of the Year on Wednesday.
At the Big West championships in Northridge, Calif., she won gold in the high jump and heptathlon. Balentine will compete in the high jump at the NCAA West preliminary round, May 23-25 in Austin, Texas. Joining her will be teammates Amanda Alvarez (triple jump) and Joanna Franke-Kuhn (hammer).
UC Davis’ Ashley Marshall received Track Athlete of the Year, while UC Davis’ Drew Wartenburg was named Coach of the Year. Cal Poly’s Laura Hollander was picked as Freshman of the Year.
Fujikawa shoots 79, 16 shots back
Honolulu’s Tadd Fujikawa shot a 7-over 79 and tied for 114th place at the eGolf Tour’s inaugural Palisades Classic in Charlotte, N.C., on Wednesday.
Andy Bare of West End, N.C., carded 10 birdies en route to a 9-under 63 and has a one-shot lead over Henry Zaytoun of Raleigh, N.C.
HPU’s Elderts named to all-region team
Hawaii Pacific outfielder Keila Elderts has been named to the 14-member Daktronics, Inc., Division II All-West Region softball team.
Hawaii Hilo’s Vanessa Salinas (pitcher) and Rebecca Lee (shortstop) and HPU’s Chante Tesoro (outfield) were named to the second team.
