Visits to corrections facility canceled again
Visitation was canceled Saturday at the Women’s Community Correctional Center due to staffing shortages, the state Department of Public Safety said.
It was the third time this month that weekend visitation has been canceled at the women’s facility in Kailua.
The department has had chronic problems with guards calling in sick on weekends and holidays.
On Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 2, 68 Oahu Community Correctional Center guards called in sick — roughly a third of the 214 adult corrections officers scheduled to work. And visitation at the women’s facility was canceled on Mother’s Day, May 11, because only nine of 29 guards showed up for work.

3 cases require rescue on Kauai
Kauai rescue crews were busy Saturday with three cases involving tourists.
Early Saturday, a rescue team aboard the Air 1 helicopter picked up an injured California man, 57, after he and his family spent the night in Kalalau Valley.
The initial call for help came in at 7:22 p.m. Friday, but darkness had already set in, making flights too dangerous.
When he was airlifted to Princeville Saturday morning, he told firefighters he would seek medical help on Oahu. He tore a ligament behind his knee, officials said.
At 9:53 a.m., crews responded to an incident along the Wailua River, where a 51-year-old San Diego woman was hurt after sliding down a 10-foot embankment. Using Air 1, the crews flew her to a clearing across from the Opaekaa Falls parking lot. From there, she was transported to Wilcox Hospital.
Around 1:30 p.m., crews aided a 51-year-old woman from Tempe, Ariz., who had slipped and fallen while bicycling with her husband along the Kuilau Trail. She hurt her left ankle.
When they arrived at the Kuilau Trail parking lot, the couple opted to drive themselves to Wilcox Hospital for further treatment.
German visitor injured on Maui
Maui fire rescue personnel assisted a 25-year-old visitor from Germany who was injured after falling some 30 feet from a waterfall at the Bamboo Forest on Friday.
The incident was reported just before 4 p.m. The man suffered injuries to his chin, jaw and elbow; he was airlifted to a secured landing zone, transferred to the care of Maui Medevac and flown to Maui Memorial Medical Center in stable condition.
