The first day of the eastern Pacific hurricane season, which will run until Nov. 30, was marked Wednesday with a report by the National Weather Service of a tropical storm forming several hundred miles south of Mexico.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said Tropical Storm Alvin is located about 665 miles south of Acapulco, moving west-northwest at 13 miles per hour.

The storm now has sustained winds near 40 miles per hour, the National Weather Service said

Alvin has the potential of turning into a Pacific hurricane in several days, weather officials said. It isn’t currently a threat to land.

With the first storm warning of the hurricane season, the Department of Emergency Management encourages everyone to get prepared as hurricane season by updating emergency plans, emergency contact lists and emergency supply kits.
