Nguyen off Pacquiao fight card
Former Junior Olympic amateur boxer Dat Nguyen of Wailuku, Maui, has withdrawn from his scheduled fight with Oscar Valdez on Saturday due to injury.
The bout was part of the undercard for the Manny Pacquiao-Timothy Bradley fight at the MGM Grand’s Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Richards, Lyman honored at Duke Challenge
Longtime Hokule‘a crew members Billy Richards and Kimo Lyman will be honored at Sunday’s 29th Duke Kahanamoku Beach Challenge hosted by the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Waikiki.
The Hokule‘a will be anchored offshore in tribute, one of the last Oahu appearances for the double-hulled sailing canoe before she sails to the Big Island on May 17 in preparation for the four-year, around-the-world voyage.
The daylong event, a fundraiser for the Waikiki Community Center, also includes a quarter-mile canoe sprint; ancient Hawaiian Makahiki games; stand-up paddleboard races in the Rainbow Lagoon; Hawaiian artist marketplace; and entertainment, including Jake Shimabukuro.
Parking will be available for $5 at the Waikiki Ilikai Hotel for participants and spectators. Admission is free for the event, which starts at 9 a.m.
Odette into bowling hall of fame
Keith Odette, who set the Hawaii state and Oahu Bowling Association records with an 879 series last year, will be inducted into the OBA Hall of Fame at the association’s annual banquet Sunday at Pearl Country Club.
Also honored will be the winners of the senior and city open tournaments.
The OBA Hall of Fame was started in 1958 and includes such greats as Francis Sing Sr., Peter Laura and Arthur Stagber, who comprised the inaugural class.
Beach wins Tantalus Time Trial
Rick Beach dominated last Sunday’s Tantalus Time Trial cycling race, finishing more than 20 seconds ahead of the nearest competitor in the 4.5-mile event up Makiki Heights Drive.
Beach finished in 19 minutes, 20.2 seconds (the course record is 18:30). Tim Marr was second (19.46) and Jason Smith third (20.00) out of 103.
The top female was Chiyo Lombard Hussle (23.41), with Lectie Altman second (24.01.6) and Michelle Goldstein third (24.35.1).
The course included an elevation change of 1,201 feet.
Baxter sweeps at Stand Up World Series
Maui’s Connor Baxter won both the distance and sprint events at the Alagoasa Pro Grand Slam in Brazil, the first stop of the Stand Up World Series.
In the distance race, Baxter broke away from the core pack — which included Hawaii’s Kai Lenny, Kody Kerbox and Zane Schweitzer — after the first leg for the victory. Australia’s Jake Jenson finished third in both races to take second overall, with Kerbox third overall after a second-place finish in the distance and sixth place in the sprint.
The next event is in Abu Dhabi.
New SUP television series debuts
"What’s SUP," the latest series created by Honolulu’s ZON3, begins airing this month on OC 16 and nationwide on Universal Sports Network.
The show features top stand-up paddleboard athletes and events from around the world. Other series created by the Hawaii-based company are "Ocean Paddler TV," which was the first to have a live webcast of the Molokai Hoe and Na Wahine O Ke Kai canoe races, and "Hawaiian Extreme Sports TV."
