Florence takes third at Quiksilver Pro
Hawaii’s John John Florence finished equal third on Friday in the Quiksilver Pro France at La Graviere.
Florence lost to eventual runner-up Dane Reynolds of California by one-tenth of a point (15.70-15.60) in clean 3- to 5-foot waves.
"Obviously, I would have wanted to make the final," Florence said on the ASP World Tour website. "It went into a very close heat and I would rather lose by 3 points away than to lose with a 0.1 difference — it feels like I was a cutback away, but I’m very happy with making the semifinals. The waves have been all-time every single day, just crazy shorebreak barrels and it’s been a lot of fun."
Kelly Slater of Florida defeated Reynolds in the final, 17.26-14.00.
Despite the loss, Florence solidified his spot at No. 4 in the World Championship Tour rankings, heading into the Rip Curl Pro Portugal.
"I can’t wait for Portugal," Florence said. "It’s pretty similar to this, maybe a little bit more organized, and I can’t wait to get some waves. Today’s result is a keeper for sure, but I think I’m pretty far away in the title race. We’ll see what happens."
Australian Joel Parkinson is currently ranked No. 1, followed by Slater and Australian Mick Fanning.

Browne appeared to injure his left knee earlier in the fight and was dropped by a right hand from Silva (17-4).
Browne showed superior agility and landed a right hook early in the fight but was clearly bothered and at times hoping on one leg after hurting his knee.
He had to be helped out of the Octagon by his trainers.
