Fire destroys Maui coffee plantation shed

Three Maui hunters needed assistance from Makawao firefighters when they got disoriented by fog and darkness on the Waiakoa Loop Trail early this morning.

Maui fire investigators have classified a shed fire in Lahaina as accidental, resulting in $5,000 in damage.

Maui fire department officials said the fire was reported at 4:43 a.m. Monday morning in the Maui Grown coffee base yard near Keawe Street.

The small wooden shed, about 15 feet by 10 feet, is used as a sleeping area for a property caretaker, the Maui fire department said. The shed and a large pile of wood pallets next to it were engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived. It was brought under control at 4:55 a.m.

The shed and a canopy used to store coffee bags were completely destroyed. No injuries were reported.
