Pro surfer Bethany Hamilton collaborated with Cobian Sandals, launching a line of her limited-edition slippers at Island Sole, Ala Moana Center.
Delivery of the line is expected in January.
The launch took place Monday and could be the start of a fashion career for the surfer, who recently marked the 10th anniversary of the shark attack on Kauai that resulted in the loss of her left arm.
She has been a role model for young girls and surfers ever since, with her message of positivity and resilience in facing challenges without fear or self-pity.
"Right now I’m honored and stoked to be involved with established companies like Rip Curl and Cobian. Starting my own brand is definitely something I have thought about and am open to, but my team and I are just looking for the right opportunity and timing," she said.
"Surfing and making a positive impact is my main focus now. I’m currently working on improving my surfing daily, doing a bit of public speaking and co-writing a new book for young girls about fitness and overall wellness.
"Being a role model is something I am constantly aware of and something that keeps me accountable to making the best choices in my life."
The Cobian collaboration came about when a longtime friend of her family, Bryan Jennings, who has been involved with Cobian for a few years, connected her with the company.
"I love the positive message that Cobian likes to share, plus their sandals are cute and comfy! I live in sandals, so it’s fun to be able to share a little bit of what I like to wear in my daily life with my fans and people around the country.
"I’m in slippahs all the time, so comfort is important, but of course I want to be wearing cute sandals. I wanted to go for neutral colors, with a touch of color, and I liked braided styles. So we came up with this design based on those ideas."
The Bethany Hamilton Limited Edition Signature Sandals by Cobian feature a comfortable braided strap, clear sole with a photo of Hamilton and an inspirational quote, and Hamilton’s signature Hawaiian flower metal strap pin. The slippers come in sizes from children to adults.
A portion of the proceeds from the sales of the $38 sandal will benefit Friends of Bethany, a nonprofit organization supporting shark attack survivors and traumatic amputees.
