Frequent fliers unite
Hawaiian Airlines and China Airlines said Monday that members of both frequent-flier programs, HawaiianMiles and Dynasty Flyer, can earn or redeem miles on either carrier for systemwide travel beginning Dec. 15. Those flights, now on sale, are for travel between North America, Hawaii and destinations throughout Asia.
FHB ‘shave off’ marks cancer awareness drive
First Hawaiian Bank employees teamed up to grow moustaches during November, participating in the annual worldwide "MOvember" charity event for the second year in a row to raise funds and create awareness of testicular and prostate cancers.
MOvember team captain Cormick Barnes, a personal banker at First Hawaiian’s main branch, said at Monday’s "Shave Off" event at First Hawaiian Center that the team of 28 men, the state’s largest MOvember team, raised more than $10,548, including a $5,000 matching gift from the First Hawaiian Bank Foundation.
MOvember, a fundraising movement that got its start in Australia, has spread worldwide with men growing moustaches for 30 days from Nov. 1 to 30 each year.
Aloha Pacific FCU expands ATM access
Aloha Pacific Federal Credit Union has signed an agreement with First Hawaiian Bank that will allow Aloha Pacific members surcharge-free access to all of the bank’s 260-plus ATMs. This agreement marks a departure from APFCU’s proprietary ATM network strategy.
"Our new strategic focus is on delivering member value," said Vince J. Otsuka, president and CEO of Aloha Pacific, the state’s third-largest credit union with $750 million in assets. "To do this, we need to find more cost-effective ways of delivering better service in an increasingly competitive marketplace."
Prior to the agreement, Aloha Pacific FCU focused on expanding its more than 40 Kalabash ATMs.
Territorial adopts fifth repurchase program
Territorial Bancorp Inc., the holding company for Territorial Savings Bank, has adopted a fifth stock repurchase program that allows it to repurchase up to 300,000 shares, or about 3 percent of the current outstanding shares.
Shares of the company fell 39 cents Monday to $23.50 on the Nasdaq.
Fast-food strikes aim at 100 U.S. cities
NEW YORK » Fast-food workers in about 100 cities will walk off the job Thursday, organizers say, which would mark the largest effort yet in a push for higher pay.
The actions are intended to build on a campaign that began about a year ago to call attention to the difficulties of living on the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour, or about $15,000 a year for a full-time employee.
