Driver legally drunk in truck crash that killed 2
A Kailua man was drunk May 5 when his pickup truck hit a tree on the Pali Highway, killing himself and a teenage girl and injuring another girl, the Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office said.
Deputy Medical Examiner Mike Kobayashi said Tuesday Mark Garcia had was 0.123 blood-alcohol count, well over the legal limit of 0.08.
Also killed in the accident was Kamalani Kalama, 13. Both were from Kailua.
Speed was a factor in the crash, police said.
Garcia lost control of the truck, which went off the highway and ended up hitting a tree on the west side of the Pali, a half mile north of Nuuanu Pali Drive, at 12:25 a.m. a half mile north of Nuuanu Pali Drive on the Pali Highway.
