4 measures advance on affordable units
The City Council Budget Committee advanced Tuesday night four resolutions needed for the city to sell 12 affordable-housing properties to a private developer.
Committee members, however, said they do not want a final vote on the measures before the full City Council at its meeting today as originally planned.
The measures are needed to seal an agreement to issue a 65-year lease for the 12 complexes to the private Honolulu Affordable Housing Partners LLC. The city would get $142 million in cash and an additional $42 million in improvements at those properties.
Council Budget Chairwoman Ann Kobayashi said she and colleagues want assurances that no one living in the units is displaced as a result of rent increases.
The extra time will allow the Carlisle administration and HAHP officials time to gather information requested by Council members, including plans by HAHP to give away three of the least profitable properties to nonprofit companies.
Big Isle officer lauded for saving gunshot victim
The Hawaii State Law Enforcement Officials Association has named Ryan Domingo the Hawaii County Police Department’s officer of the year.
Domingo administered lifesaving first aid to a gunshot victim in Hilo on May 13, the Police Department said. Domingo found a 55-year-old woman on the kitchen floor of a home in a pool of blood and immediately applied pressure to her wounds to control the bleeding.
The woman was shot in her left shoulder, right hand, left knee and right thigh. Domingo reassured her and kept her calm for more than 20 minutes, police said. Domingo also obtained evidence by recording his conversation with the woman.
A suspect arrested at the scene has been charged with attempted murder and burglary.
Sewage spill temporarily closes road
Kauai County officials were trying to determine what caused an estimated 50 to 100 gallons of raw sewage to spill Tuesday morning in Hanapepe.
The spill was reported at about 6:50 a.m. along the shoulder of Kaumualii Highway near the Hanapepe fire station and wastewater pump stations.
Officials closed Hana Road temporarily while contractors with pumper trucks cleaned up the spill.
Booth to offer ways to keep burglars at bay
Hawaii County community policing officers will set up an informational booth Friday at Prince Kuhio Plaza in Hilo to help people prevent burglaries.
The booth will be in the plaza’s center court area between 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Officers will distribute brochures and display ideas for securing homes and possessions.
