Hikers and New Year’s revelers will greet 2014 along the scenic Makapuu lighthouse trail edging Oahu’s easternmost tip.
The state is inviting the public to participate in a "First Day" sunrise hike at Makapuu for the third year.
As in previous years, a chanter will offer a traditional Hawaiian oli at the summit — minutes before the sun peeks from the horizon to greet the first sunrise of the 2014 — and Taiko Center drummers will also perform, the Department of Land and Natural Resources said in a news release.
The gate to the trail parking lot off Kalanianaole Highway will open at 5:30 a.m. Wednesday, and parking will be first-come, first-served. Last year the lot was full by 5:45 a.m. Parking is also available along the highway.
The sun is expected to make its appearance at 7:09 a.m. Flashlights are recommended for the hike because the sky won’t brighten until around 6:45 a.m.
Roughly 600 people attended last year’s hike along the Ka Iwi State Scenic Shoreline to a somewhat cloudy sunrise over the ocean and neighbor islands, the department said.
Whales could also be spotted in the water below the trail. On a clear day Molokai and Lanai are visible.
The trail is a 1909 paved lighthouse management road that leads to the summit above the historic red-roofed Makapuu Point Lighthouse. The 1.5-mile round trip is considered of moderate difficulty because it is steep but is well suited for children of any age, and strollers are welcome, the department said.
Pets are allowed but must be leashed at all times.
Hikers should wear supportive shoes and bring windbreakers, water, warm beverages and cameras.
Portable toilets will be provided.
The hike is one of about 550 "First Day" hikes observed across all 50 states as part of an initiative spearheaded by the America’s State Parks organization to promote healthy lifestyles and encourage year-round recreation at state parks, the department said.

Also on New Year’s morning, the Mid-Pacific Road Runners Club will host a 10K run near Sandy Beach in Hawaii Kai. The Bosetti 10K will start from Kealahou Street at 7 a.m.
