Tennessee Titans head coach Ken Whisenhunt said he liked what he saw from quarterback Marcus Mariota on the first day of rookie camp drills Friday in Nashville, Tenn.

“He’s doing as good of a job as he can do; he works hard at it. He’s a very sharp young man,” Whisenhunt told reporters after practice. “I like the way he goes about his game. Physically out there today he made some good plays. And, that’s what you like seeing.”

Mariota, wearing a red uniform with No. 8 on it, was among 60 players, draft picks, free agents and tryouts, on the field. All but the first 35 minutes of the session was closed to the media.

Whisenhunt said, “I didn’t detect any nervousness (on Mariota’s part). I would say it was probably fair to say anxiousness was a part of it. I think that’s a normal human emotion. Not so much worried about what he was doing, just to finally get back to football.”

Mariota, the second player chosen in last month’s NFL Draft, said, “It went well. It was great. It was really exciting and I think for all of us these last few months have been a long process and it was good just to get back to football.”

Mariota, the 2014 Heisman Trophy winner from the University of Oregon, is a 2011 graduate from Saint Louis School.
