Maruyama steps down as ‘Iolani coach
Eddie Maruyama has resigned as girls basketball coach at ‘Iolani.
Maruyama, who is a co-athletic director, said assistant coach Dean Young will likely succeed him.
Young, son of long-time Raiders coach Glenn Young, has coached at the intermediate level for years, Maruyama said.
“The timing was right,” he said.
‘Iolani reached the semifinals of the state tournament the past three seasons. The Raiders were 15-8 overall last season, and second in the ILH with a 9-3 record.
Yee to leave Waiakea for Hawaii Hilo
Kevin Yee has stepped down from his position as baseball coach at Waiakea to join the staff at the University of Hawaii Hilo starting in August.
“These kinds of opportunities are hard to come by,” he said after telling his team the news following their last game on Friday at the state tourney.
Yee guided Waiakea to its first state baseball championship last year — his first season on the job — with a 17-0 mark. Waiakea lost in the quarterfinal round last week and finished 12-6 this season.
Konawaena football welcomes visitors
Konawaena football has been on an upswing, but with that comes scheduling challenges.
Assistant coach Trent Walters has taken initiative. The program is sending out an open invitation to off-island teams to come play the Wildcats in the preseason.
“We are offering to help with rooms if any team is willing to travel to Kona,” Walters said. “We will play any team. We are desperate for a game.”
Walters can be reached at 557-9997.
Konawaena’s only other nonconference game is at Maui.
The Wildcats reached the state tournament the past two seasons.
