Aiea Elementary to reopen Friday after main break
Aiea Elementary School is closed Thursday after its campus was flooded following a break in a Navy water line.
Classes for the 366 students at Aiea Elementary School will resume Friday, the Department of Education reported.
The break happened at about 6:14 a.m. on Kaimakani Street near the entrance to the Aiea Elementary School parking lot, sending gushes of water into the campus.
Denise Emsley, spokeswoman for he Navy Facilities Engineering Command, said the source of excess water appears to be coming from under one of the bus stops in front of the school.
“This could mean a break in the Navy’s 24-inch pipe located under Kaimakani Street, which moves water from its Halawa Pump Station, or a lateral line leading off that pipe,” she said.
Crews shut down the waterline at 10 a.m.

Emsley said repair work will continue throughout the day and into the night.
Damages on Kaimakani Street include a portion of the asphalt road, part of a side walk and a bus stop, Emsley added.
At one point, just after 7 a.m., a quarter of the school’s parking lot was flooded, said Department of Education spokesman Alex Da Silva. The school closed because of the flooding and concerns that the water may have affected the road leading to the school, he said.
The classrooms and offices at the school, located at 88-370 Moanalua Road, were not damaged, Da Silva said.
The school did not lose water service because its water is supplied by the Board of Water Supply.
The Navy said Board of Water Supply water lines were used to provide water to Camp Smith and Halawa Housing.
