Kanaka Ikaika season offers new races

New races, new race series and new courses are part of the new season for the Kanaka Ikaika Racing Association.

KIRA kicks off its 11-race calendar on Jan. 11 with 5- and 8-mile races that end at Kailua Beach Park. All events have divisions for surfskis, SUPs, prone paddleboards, OC-1 through OC-6 and V-1s.

The new Scott Hawaii Gold Challenge, a three-event series, offers various denominations of gold coins for the top three series finishers. Two former events are back on the calendar in the Molokai World Championship on May 18 and the Sunset-Turtle Bay to Haleiwa race on March 9. The Maui Jim Waterman Series again will be held to determine the best waterman and waterwoman via a series of four races and four paddlecraft: prone paddleboard, surfski, SUP and OC-1.

SK808 coming up

The sixth annual SK808 Roller Derby Tournament, featuring five teams from Hawaii, Canada, Sweden and the U.S. mainland, is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 4, at Palama Settlement Gym.

The round-robin event runs from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. General admission is $10 at the door.

The players also will participate in Camp Awesome, a skating clinic to be held Jan. 2 and 3 at Papaklea Community Center.
