A one-hitter with 10 strikeouts is a career game for most pitchers.
For Saint Louis senior Jordan Yamamoto, it’s just another day at the park.
"This has been what he’s been doing," Saint Louis coach George Gusman said Tuesday after Yamamoto pitched the No. 2 Crusaders to a 5-1 victory over No. 5 Punahou at Goeas Field in Hawaii Kai.
"We feel like we can win a 1-0 or a 2-1 game with him on the mound," Gusman continued. "It makes it tough on the opposing team."
Yamamoto is one of the top senior prospects in the state this year after seeing his velocity improve over the summer.
He sat 90 to 91 miles per hour in the first two innings, touching 92 a few times when he needed it.
The Arizona signee, who was watched by a dozen scouts, improved to 2-0 in ILH play, facing three batters over the minimum.
His 10 strikeouts included three against Punahou catcher KJ Harrison, another top prospect who has signed with Oregon State.
"The ILH in general is so competitive, but knowing this game that (Punahou) has other professional prospects on that team made me more pumped up and want this game a little more," Yamamoto said.
Yamamoto struck out five his first time through the Punahou lineup and retired 10 in a row before Aaron Fong broke up a perfect game with a single in the hole between short and third.
Punahou’s only other base runners came on a leadoff walk in the sixth and two errors, including one that allowed Robert Straton to score Punahou’s only run.
"It was one of my better performances but I wouldn’t have been able to get a one-hitter if it wasn’t for Devan (Stubblefield’s) nice catch in center and all of the other little plays my defense made behind me," Yamamoto said.
Stubblefield, who has signed to play both football and baseball at Hawaii, is another prospect scouts had their eyes on Tuesday.
He was 0-for-2 at the plate with a walk and scored from first on a sacrifice bunt to make it 3-0 in the fourth.
Jacob White put down a bunt to third that was fielded cleanly, but on the throw to first, Stubblefield rounded second and took off for third, where nobody was covering. Punahou first baseman Bo Coolen tried to make a throw at third to Harrison, but the ball got away, allowing Stubblefield to come home easily.
Yamamoto then finished it off with a two-run homer in the fifth, taking an 0-2 pitch from Punahou freshman lefty Noah Goss deep over the fence in left.
Jacob Gribbin added an RBI double for the Crusaders (3-1). Goss allowed four earned runs on six hits in six innings with four strikeouts and five walks for the Buffanblu (1-3-1).
"We made the most of our opportunities today," Gusman said. "We didn’t play well on Saturday against ‘Iolani and we worked hard yesterday and talked about things we needed to do better and I thought we made strides today."
