Distressed swimmer was Honolulu man, 70
The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office has identified a 70-year-old man who died Tuesday afternoon after getting in trouble while swimming at Ala Moana Beach Park as Herbert Jaschke of Honolulu.
The Medical Examiner’s Office has deferred the cause of death.
Emergency Medical Services said the man was pulled to shore by another person at about 2:45 p.m. and lifeguards began cardiopulmonary resuscitation. EMS and fire personnel arrived and EMS took over treatment.
He was in extremely critical condition when he was taken to a hospital, where he died.
Trench cave-in sends worker to hospital
A 66-year-old worker was critically injured Wednesday when a trench on a Kailua-Kona street caved in, the Hawaii County Fire Department said.
The man, identified as a worker for E.M. Rivera, was working in a roughly 8-foot-deep utility trench when the wall collapsed, a fire official said.
The man had difficulty breathing and suffered trauma to his face, the Fire Department said.
He was initially in serious condition, but his condition worsened to critical when he was being transported by ambulance to a hospital, the fire official said.
The company had been doing work for Hawaii County on Kaiminani Drive when the cave-in occurred, according to the Fire Department.
