Youth facility escapee is back in custody
An 18-year-old Hawaii Youth Correctional Facility escapee was recaptured Monday night after the vehicle he was driving hit a police car in Waianae.
The suspect was arrested at about 11 p.m. on suspicion of second-degree escape, second-degree robbery, driving without a license and vehicle property damage after hitting the police car and a pole.
Brush fire burns at Schofield training range
U.S. Army and Federal Fire Department crews continued to fight a brush fire Tuesday evening at a Schofield Barracks training range, the Army said.
An estimated 30 acres have burned. There is no threat to nearby facilities or people, the Army said.
Soldiers were conducting "indirect fire" training in the Schofield Barracks impact area at the time of the fire, U.S. Army Garrison Hawaii said. Although officials did not specify what type of training, indirect fire includes artillery and mortars.
Man arrested after shot fired at police officer
An 83-year-old man was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of first-degree attempted murder for allegedly firing a shot at a police officer after barricading himself in a bedroom of his Kalaheo home, Kauai police said.
Two officers went to the Palama Street home just before 10 a.m. to serve a grand jury warrant on Robert W. Yount, police said.
The man would not comply as officers tried to detain him, according to a Kauai County police news release.
Police said the officers entered the house when the man barricaded himself in his bedroom. The man then fired a single shot at one of the officers, police said.
No injuries were reported.
According to the Garden Island, Yount was indicted by a Kauai grand jury on first-degree negligent homicide charges.
Yount was the driver of a vehicle that struck and killed Jill Garnett, 26, of Waimea as she was walking west on the eastbound shoulder of Kaumualii Highway near the Kipu Road junction in Puhi shortly before 9 a.m. March 16, the newspaper reported.
Yount was also charged with two counts each of inattention to driving, and accidents involving damage to unattended vehicle or other property.
