Elite runners take off in the early morning darkness of the 2011 Honolulu Marathon. The race attracted 22,615 competitors and pumped $107.7 million into Hawaii's economy.

The Dec. 9 Honolulu Marathon expects to generate record revenue this year.

Registrations are already up by nearly 4,000 over last year’s final total, said marathon spokesman Pat Bigold.

So far 26,302 have registered, including 13,045 Japanese, Bigold said. The Japanese numbers are already ahead of last year’s race day total. Last year there were about 12,000 Japanese runners.

Registration will continue until the day before the race.

“We could wind up with one of the largest fields ever,” said Bigold. “The race has reached 30,000 six times. Five of those years were in the 1990s and the last one was 2002.”

Hawaii entries are well up at 11,212, Bigold said. Last year there were 8,201 local entries.
