Hawaii Hilo athletic director steps down
Hawaii Hilo athletic director Dexter Irvin resigned Tuesday and accepted a position as athletic director at the College of Southern Nevada in Henderson, Nev.
After final approval, Timothy Moore, the founding director of the UHH recreation department, will serve as interim athletic director.
Moore joined the Hilo campus in 2008 from SMU, where he served as assistant athletic director among other duties.
A national search for a permanent athletic director will be launched sometime in 2014.
UHH holds on to beat Alaska Fairbanks
Hawaii Hilo defeated Alaska Fairbanks 60-58 in women’s basketball in Hilo on Tuesday night.
After trailing 33-21 at the half, the Nanooks (5-1) outscored the Vulcans 37-27 in the second half, but UHH secured the win by sinking its free throws in the final minutes.
CC Rode and Jordan Kealoha had 12 points apiece for Hawaii Hilo (1-1).
Western Washington topples BYUH
No. 7-ranked Western Washington topped Brigham Young-Hawaii 80-74 in men’s basketball 80-74 on Tuesday in Bellingham, Wash.
Richard Woodworth scored 22 points for the Vikings (2-0).
Pablo Coro had 15 points in the first half for the Seasiders (1-1), but left the game with an injury.
BYUH’s DeAndre Medlock posted a double-double, scoring 22 points with 14 rebounds.
BYUH and HPU in D-II tennis rankings
Brigham Young-Hawaii and Hawaii Pacific are both in the top four in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Preseason Women’s NCAA Division II rankings.
The Seasiders are ranked second, which is where they finished at the NCAA championship last spring. Marika Kobayashi is No. 17 individually, with teammate Marietta Tuionetoa 26th. Those two are third in doubles.
The Sea Warriors are fourth among the women and fifth in the men’s ranking. Their only ranked woman is No. 34 Celina Goetti, one of five returning starters from last season’s fourth-ranked team.
Men’s captain Petr Michnev is ranked second in singles. Sophomore teammate Jaume Martinez-Vich is sixth.
The BYUH men are ranked 18th, with Martin Chojnacki 25th in singles.
Cyr tied for 41st in Web.com qualifier
Makawao’s Sam Cyr is tied for 41st after shooting even-par 72 in the first round of the Web.com Second Stage golf qualifier Tuesday at Murrieta, Calif. The top 20 and ties after Friday’s final round advance to the Final Qualifying Stage next month and earn playing privileges on the 2014 Web.com Tour.
Cyr had four bogeys and four birdies at Bear Creek Golf Club. Nearly three quarters of the field of 79 is within five shots of each other.
At Gautier, Miss., Honolulu’s Tadd Fujikawa had just seven pars in an opening round 4-over-par 76 and is tied for 65th. The top 19 and ties move on. Fujikawa had five birdies, with four bogeys, a double bogey and a triple bogey at Shell Landing.
U.S. defeats Japan in world tourney opener
Despite 22 service errors, the U.S. Men’s National Volleyball Team overcame Japan to open the FIVB World Grand Champions Cup with a 25-17, 25-17, 21-25, 25-20 win Tuesday at the Kyoto Prefectural Gymnasium.
The U.S. takes on two-time defending champion Brazil today in the round-robin tournament.
Hawaii’s Micah Christenson and Erik Shoji started for the U.S., with Shoji getting 14 digs. Kawika Shoji was a serving substitute. Futi Tavana from Kauai is also on the 14-man roster.
The U.S., which lost two exhibitions against Japan leading into the tournament, outblocked its opponent 17-7 and had 20 more kills.
Garcia featured in Talk Story series
Former world champion surfer Sunny Garcia is the featured speaker at the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing "Talk Story" Series tonight at the Turtle Bay Resort’s Surfer, The Bar.
Other speakers scheduled are Australian filmmaker Tony Harrington, who will discuss his movie "The Barrel" on Nov. 27; Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau defending champion Greg Long on Dec. 4; and master navigator Nainoa Thompson of the Polynesian Voyaging Society on Dec. 11
Each session begins at 7:30 p.m. A $10 donation at the door goes to a nonprofit group selected by each speaker.

Koa Anuenue looking for president
The deadline to apply for the presidency of ‘Ahahui Koa Anuenue, the fundraising arm of University of Hawaii athletics, is Friday.
The vacancy was created when Vince Baldemor accepted the athletic director’s job at Hawaii Pacific last month.
Among the requirements are three years of successful experience in sales, marketing, fundraising or similar activities. The salary is commensurate with experience, with a starting date of Jan. 2, 2014.
The deadline to submit applications is 4 p.m. Friday and can be either mailed to the Koa Anuenue office (1337 Lower Campus Rd., Honolulu, HI, 96822) or emailed to Vince@koaanuenue.org.
The search committee includes UH athletic director Ben Jay; Koa Anuenue board of directors chairman Al Chee; vice chairman Ray Ono and board member Chris Kobayashi.
