SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. » More than 1,200 pastors in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico are expected to preach about electoral candidates in defiance of the IRS on Sunday.

Legal ministry Alliance Defending Freedom will be holding the fifth annual Pulpit Freedom Sunday where pastors have committed to preach sermons that present biblical perspectives on the positions of electoral candidates despite the restrictions of the Johnson Amendment.

The Johnson Amendment of 1954, named after then-Sen. Lyndon Johnson, refers to a change in the U.S. tax code that does not allow charities, including churches, to "participate in, or intervene in (including the publishing or distributing of statements) any political campaign on behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate for public office,” according to the IRS.
