Trying to figure out how good this University of Hawaii baseball team is?
Recent history indicates the first road trip of the season tells a lot about where the Rainbow Warriors might end up in May.
Hawaii has lost 11 of its past 13 nonconference games away from Les Murakami Stadium heading into a showdown at No. 10 Texas beginning Friday.
UH (6-6) hasn’t had a wining trip to start the season since it won games at Long Beach State, Cal State Fullerton and San Diego to go 3-2 in 2010, the last time it reached an NCAA regional.
UH went 1-4 on its first road trip last year, when it won only 16 games, and was swept at Gonzaga in 2012, when the Rainbow Warriors went 0-2 in their final WAC tournament.

"You hope that you travel well, because if you’re going to win and go to the postseason, you have to win on the road," Hawaii coach Mike Trapasso said. "But I think every team is different. The measuring stick is going out and playing well and getting better like we have the last two weeks."
It won’t be easy against a Texas team that has won 10 of its past 11 and is ranked 10th in the country by Baseball America.
The Longhorns’ three starters on Friday and Saturday all boast an ERA of 1.00 or less. As a team, Texas is 17th in the country with a 2.04 ERA and has done it against quality teams. The Longhorns have already played series against California and Stanford out of the Pac-12.
"When you’re going to play Texas, you’re going to face pitchers that five or six years from now will be in the big leagues," Trapasso said. "We always know that with them."
Hawaii last played Texas in 2011, winning the middle game of the series in 15 innings.
Conner George and junior Jarrett Arakawa are the only holdovers from that team.
Arakawa was given the week off in the Pepperdine series to rest his surgically repaired left shoulder. He will start the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader after throwing a quality bullpen session at practice on Tuesday before the team left for Texas on Wednesday.
"He threw well," Trapasso said. "He’s good to go Saturday."
So is designated hitter Jordan Richartz, who was hit by a pitch on his left ankle in Saturday’s loss to the Waves.
Trapasso wanted one more look at freshman Marcus Doi after practice on Thursday night but said he’s close to returning full-time after aggravating a groin injury against Albany.
Doi hasn’t started any of the past six games but has been available to pinch-hit. Hawaii failed to get a hit in the leadoff spot against the Waves without him as senior outfielder Kalei Hanawahine went hitless in 16 at-bats.
First baseman Marc Flores hit at least .500 for the second straight series, going 7-for-14 with a double and three runs scored against Pepperdine to raise his average to .286.
Sophomore Juliene Jones is hitting .351 with six runs scored and is tied with Richartz for the team lead with seven RBIs.
Ah Sam likely out for year
Freshman left-hander Bryce Ah Sam will likely miss the rest of the season with an elbow injury that might require Tommy John surgery.
If that happens in the next eight weeks, he would be the fourth UH pitcher in the past 13 months to undergo the procedure.
Ah Sam hurt his elbow in Saturday’s finale against Pepperdine and had to be taken out of the game.
