A high-surf warning for the north- and west-facing shores of Kauai, Niihau, Oahu and Molokai, and the north-facing shores of Maui, is in effect thorugh this afternoon.
The warning was prompted by a large northwest swell that is expected to produce hazardous surf conditions — including surf of up to 30 feet — overnight, according to the National Weather Service.
The weather service said surf would likely build rapidly early and peak Friday evening.
Surf-related hazards may include ocean water sweeping across portions of beaches, strong breaking waves and strong long-shore and rip currents.
The weather service also issued a small-craft advisory for Hawaiian coastal waters within 40 nautical miles, including the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary.
The advisory notes predicted southeasterly winds of 10 knots, wind waves of up to 4 feet and a northeasterly swell rising to 15 feet overnight.
Meanwhile, a front approaching from the northwest is expected to foster local land and sea breeze circulation through today.
The weather service predicts clouds and isolated showers to develop over interior sections of the islands, with low clouds and showers to east- and southeast-facing slopes, this afternoon.
Wetter weather is expected to follow as the front reaches the island.
