The Star-Advertiser’s total average weekday circulation jumped nearly 28 percent in the past year, lifting it to 21st place among the nation’s top 25 daily newspapers.
Hawaii’s largest newspaper, which was ranked 25th in the U.S. a year ago, had a total average circulation of 268,244 as of March 31, up from 209,915 in March 2012, according to the Alliance for Audited Media, previously called the Audit Bureau of Circulations.
"Newspaper readership in the Honolulu marketplace is at an all-time high thanks to our content being available across multiple platforms," said Dennis Francis, president and publisher of the Star-Advertiser. "It was quite a milestone last year to reach No. 25 in the U.S., and moving up to No. 21 proves our hard work and creative approaches are working."
The Star-Advertiser’s 28 percent surge in circulation was the second-largest increase among the top 25 newspapers. The fastest growing in the top 25 was the Atlanta Journal-Constitution at 32.6 percent. Daily circulation among all 593 U.S. newspapers reporting was down 0.7 percent in March from a year ago.
The Star-Advertiser’s total average circulation includes 125,726 for its print edition, 68,993 for paid or registered digital subscribers and 73,525 for affiliated publications, including MidWeek, USA Today Hawaii Edition and Street Pulse.
The Star-Advertiser ranked 18th among U.S. daily newspapers in digital subscribers. Digital subscribers accounted for 26 percent of the Star-Advertiser’s total circulation. For all U.S. papers, digital editions account for 19.3 percent of total average circulation, up from 14.2 percent in March 2012.
