The Cathedral of St. Andrew is dedicating Sunday’s choral evensong service to the memory of Nelson Mandela, the first black South African democratically elected as president of his country.
The Cathedral Men’s Schola choir will sing at the celebration of the life of Mandela, a global leader whose legacy was forgiveness and reconciliation in the face of racism, a news release said. Bishop Robert Fitzpatrick of the Episcopal Diocese of Hawaii will offer prayers for justice and peace throughout the world. The Rev. Walter B.A. Brownridge, dean of St. Andrew’s, who has served in South Africa, will also speak at the 5:30 p.m. service.
A condolence book will be available for the public to sign. It will be sent to the office of the archbishop of Cape Town, the head of the Anglican Church of Southern Africa, who will forward it to the Mandela family and the Nelson Mandela Foundation.
In other events, this morning St. Andrew’s, with the help of P&E Foods, distributed about 2,000 pounds of meat to almost 300 families of students at Kalihi Waena Elementary School after the school’s annual Christmas party. The cathedral regularly provides support to Kalihi Waena students, including sponsoring an annual drive for school supplies.
Also, the cathedral’s annual Christmas Carol Concert will be held at 3 p.m. Dec. 22. Attendees may sing along with favorite traditional carols in the church, located at 229 Queen Emma Square. For more information, call 524-2822, ext. 217.
